Successful transformation of Ideal Standard delivers 20% earnings improvement

In 2019, Ideal Standard, one of the leading manufacturers of Ceramic sanitary ware and bathroom faucets in Europe, with annual sales of approximately €730m, successfully completed its 3-year transformation program.

Significant investment, for example in new manufacturing technology, as well as the launch of new products including the highly-acclaimed Atelier design collection and the innovative WC pre-wall system ProSys, were instrumental in achieving the 20% earnings improvement versus the prior year.

Ideal Standard is privately owned by Anchorage Capital and CVC Credit Partners. The shareholders always explore all potential options to best secure the future strategic development of Ideal Standard, either as a stand-alone business or in synergetic combination with other marketing leading players, especially given the company’s successful turnaround, and in the context of the continued consolidation of the bathroom industry.

Ideal Standard opens new £1M flagship showroom in Clerkenwell with insight-driven inauguration

Ideal Standard International, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of private and public bathroom solutions, has inaugurated its new £1 million Clerkenwell showroom with a day dedicated to insight and design inspiration. The four-storey design & specification hub was officially opened by Ideal Standard Group’s CEO Torsten Türling and UK Managing Director Stephen Ewer 26th June, marking a new milestone in the company’s quest to regain design leadership in the industry.

The manufacturer’s London Design and Specification Centre was created to bring together a variety of industry professionals, from architects and designers to project developers and specifiers. The Italian-inspired launch event reflected this with unique discussions between Ideal Standard’s Chief Design Officer Roberto Palomba and long-standing design partner Robin Levien on developing attitudes, trends and influences around bathroom design, as well as a broader industry outlook.

Ideal Standard recently announced its exclusive partnership with renowned design studio Palomba Serafini Associati and the appointment of Roberto Palomba as the company’s Chief Design Officer. The new showroom houses a number of inspirational collections born out of this collaboration, including a beautiful new palette for the Ipalyss basins which take inspiration from previous iconic colours, to create elegant new solutions.

The new flagship space also showcases another example of Studio Palomba Serafini Associati reinterpreting a classic masterpiece for the modern era with the new Conca collection. The collection takes inspiration from the original, designed in 1972 by Paolo Tilche – a range that signaled a shift from pure practicality to a combination of form and function in the bathroom. In their contemporary design interpretation, Palomba Serafini Associati kept the geometries and sensual details of the original design, but brought Ideal Standard’s advanced manufacturing technologies into play to enable a new level of purity in the design while retaining its unique, sophisticated character.

Other brands in the Ideal Standard family are also featured with innovative healthcare and commercial washroom solutions from Armitage Shanks and beautiful products from Sottini, the timeless residential bathroom brand.

Torsten Türling, Ideal Standard Group CEO, commented: “As a family made up of the most well-known bathroom brands in the UK, Ideal Standard has made its mark across the entire bathroom industry. For over two centuries, we’ve been focused on Innovation and Design to make life better for our customers. Working closely together with architects, designers, urban planners and construction companies, we want to positively shape the future of modern living. This latest flagship Design and Specification Center in the heart of London’s creative hub was created with exactly this philosophy in mind and we look forward to welcoming all of our customers and partners.”

Stephen Ewer, UK Managing Director, Ideal Standard, added: “Whether it’s supporting our NHS in reducing the spread of infection in hospitals or helping luxury hotels and developers become more aspirational with beautiful products, better and considered design is the key that has always allowed us to keep moving forward as a business.”

“The discussions which took place today showed us how important this is. We can’t stand still in a world which is constantly changing. This showroom, which allows specifiers, designers and architects to share ideas and develop together, is an important step towards better understanding the needs of today and the demands of tomorrow.”

Following the talk, Roberto Palomba, said: “Over the past decades, bathrooms and washrooms have become increasingly important spaces in the overall design and architecture of buildings. Working with Master designers like Gio Ponti in the 50’s and Paolo Tilche and the 70’s and 80’s, Ideal Standard played an important part in this evolution, not only introducing design in the world of bathrooms but also influencing society as a whole and redefining the role of the bathroom within it. Our goal is to build on this strong heritage and translate it into the 21st century – like we did with the creation of the new Conca series or the introduction of the unique colour palette to Ideal Standard’s ceramics and faucets portfolio. Going forward, we will continue to design collections that reflect the company’s history while offering customers something they’ve never seen before.”

Robin Levien, owner of Studio Levien said: “Having worked with Ideal Standard for several decades, I know that innovation-led products can have a significant positive impact on people’s lives. A lot of the time true innovation comes from looking at and learning from the past. This is an ethos built into Ideal Standard’s business, with many of its products building on the most outstanding elements of previous successful collections, and reimagining them for today’s world. The solutions you’ll find in this showroom have been created to answer the needs of modern customers, helping architects, designers, developers and specification professionals alike.”

Ideal Standard’s new London Design and Specification Centre is at 76-78 Clerkenwell Road. For more information about Ideal Standard and its family of UK brands visit:

Ideal Standard launches new era of Design

Regaining Design leadership as next major milestone in company turnaround strengthen our brand.

In December 2018, Ideal Standard, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of private and public bathrooms solutions, announced its exclusive long-term partnership with renowned design studio Palomba Serafini Associati. At ISH 2019, the company proudly presents the first ranges resulting from this cooperation, marking the beginning of a new era of Design.

Torsten Türling, CEO of Ideal Standard Group: “In the last few years, we have successfully improved our cost competitiveness as well as our innovation pipeline. The next important step now is to regain design leadership and strengthen our brand.“

Ground-breaking design has always been part of Ideal Standard’s DNA. Working with Master designers like Gio Ponti in the 1950s or Achille Castiglioni and Paolo Tilche in the 1970s and ‘80s, the company not only introduced design in the world of bathrooms, it influenced society as a whole and redefined the role of the bathroom within it.

Torsten Türling: “Ideal Standard always has been a design brand, with deep rooted skills and a rich heritage. Having been raised by the Master designers of the past and representing Italian design in all its aspects around the world, we could think of no-one better than Ludovica and Roberto Palomba to explore this heritage and translate it into the 21st Century”.

Palomba Serafini Associati have been trendsetters in bathroom design for the last 25 years. Beyond the bathroom space they collaborate with leading international brands like Kartell or Samsung. Their work is internationally recognised having received a multitude of prestigious awards, including the acclaimed Compasso D’Oro. To date, PS+A is the only designer who received this award for a bathroom project.

Presenting the first design range at ISH 2019: The new Conca

The Conca series was originally designed for Ideal Standard by Master designer Paolo Tilche in 1972, and it had profound impact on the culture of design. In their contemporary design interpretation, Ludovica + Roberto Palomba kept the geometries and sensual details of the original design, but brought Ideal Standards’ advanced manufacturing technologies into play that enabled a new level of purity in the design, unthinkable in the 1970s.

Roberto Palomba: “Taking on an iconic design like Conca from a Master designer I have admired since I started my career is both exciting and scary. I am extremely proud of the result and believe we were able to create a piece that fits today’s trends while retaining its unique, sophisticated character”.

Ideal Standard’s new CONCA series of basins presented at ISH 2019 as a world premiere is complemented by two distinct series of faucets designed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba: the cylindrical JOY and the exceptionally flat basin mixer CONCA. Both add a different, unique character to the Conca basin. Furthermore, studio Palomba Serafini Associati designed an architectural toilet and bidet range called BLEND, as well as a stunning free-standing bath tub in Conca design.

Hinting once again at Ideal Standard’s successful design heritage in which colour played an important role, Ludovica + Roberto Palomba also developed a stylish new colour palette for the company’s ceramics and faucets portfolio. At the heart of its 850m² stand at ISH, Ideal Standards presents its enhanced colour IPALYSS basin range, based on the patented ultrathin ceramic material Diamatec®.

Shaping the Future of Modern living

For more than 100 years, Ideal Standard is focused on Innovation and Design to make life better for customers. Working closely with leading universities, architects, urban designers and construction companies around the world, Ideal Standard aims at positively shaping the future of modern living, meeting the needs of customers today and anticipating the demands of modern life tomorrow.

Modern lifestyle trends like the shift to a culture of ‘sharing’ have triggered a clear evolution where private and public lives blend together. This requires a new vision for bathroom solutions, a vision on form and function.

At ISH 2019, Ideal Standard showcases this vision through a number of innovations and new product offerings like its comprehensive pre-wall installation system PROSYS™. Premiered at ISH, PROSYS™ perfectly complements the company’s revolutionary silent and hygienic WC flush technology AQUABLADE®. The innovative NAVIGO® platform with its push button technology provides the ultimate personalized shower experience in hotels as well as at home. For public washrooms, the new generation of Ideal Standard’s touch-free, soap integrated sensor-tap INTELLIMIX® and the newly developed, mobile-enabled SPHERO™ anti-splash urinal provide ultimate convenience to both users and operators.

The next generation of Ideal Standard

Central to Ideal Standard’s core identity is the expression of “Together for Better”, where ‘better is the promise we make to our customers, our trusted partners and the millions of people who use our products every day’.

Through the collaboration with Palomba Serafini Associati and the recent creation of a Global Design Center in Milan, Italy, Ideal Standard targets to create a distinct design style looking at the bathroom as part of the architecture in its entirety ‘where all things are considered’ and that is marked by its purity and simplicity.

As mentioned by Roberto Palomba, “A well-designed project completely transcends its function and becomes timeless”. This is what Ideal Standard calls ‘The Eternal Value of Design’: a synergy of functional perfection and aesthetic beauty where design gives meaning beyond function and quality is second to none.”

Torsten Türling: “I am delighted by this next phase of our turnaround story and our renewed focus on design. Like no other player in this industry, we can build on deep design heritage as well as broad manufacturing expertise in each of our core categories, Ceramics, Fittings and Bath tubs/trays. Together with the unmatched skills of design studio Palomba Serafini Associati, we can create and large-scale industrialize designs that were not possible before.”
